History

Paul and Terry Klaassen use the Dutch model of long-term care to look after seniors, also called assisted living.[3]

Paul and Terry Klaassen established Virginia-based Sunrise Assisted Living in 1981 with their first home in Oakton, VA. With expansion throughout the United States, Sunrise opened its first International location at Frognal House in the United Kingdom. This location was historically the residence of Lord Sydney, a promenent British political figure. Sunrise would then expand into Canada with Sunrise of Unionville in 2001.

Sunrise has pursued an aggressive growth strategy, partnering with real estate firms rather than owning and operating its own facilities.[4] In 2010 Sunrise closed all of its locations in Germany.

In 2003 the name of the company was changed from Sunrise Assisted Living to Sunrise Senior Living.

In 2008, Paul Klaassen stepped down as CEO and was replaced by Mark Ordan.[5]

To mark the 30th Anniversary of Sunrise Senior Living in 2011, the company changed the Sunrise logo from green to orange.

In 2011, Sunrise Senior Living employs approximately 31,000 and operated more than 300 retirement communities internationally.
